We are a market-leading firm in Belgium. Our reputation is built on high-profile work in the Belgian market and multi-jurisdiction transactions, antitrust and regulatory matters.

Domestic strength and international know-how

Our Belgian track record goes back to 1968, and today there are 13 partners and over 40 lawyers in our full-service Brussels office. We work with clients on a range of complex, often multi-jurisdictional questions and have particular strengths in multijurisdictional M&A, private equity, banking, finance and capital markets.

Our work regularly makes Belgian headlines. Recent examples include: advising the sponsors in connection with the EUR650m financing of the A11 PPP, a new motorway connection for harbour traffic between Zeebrugge Seaport and the hinterland, the first Greenfield PPP to be financed under the European Investment Bank Project Bond Initiative by bonds with credit enhancement from the EIB; advising PE funds Sagard & Ergon Capital in relation to the sale of the Corialis group to Advent and to the Management of the Corialis group; assisting Materialise NV on its IPO with listing on NASDAQ and advising KanAm, one of the biggest German pension funds, on the sale of the Kievit asset to AG Real Estate, one of the largest real estate transactions on the Belgian market for 2014.

Our talented lawyers’ work on transactions like these helped us win ‘Belgium law firm of the year’ in 2013 from Chambers Europe and the International Financial Law Review in 2014.

Experts in antitrust, state-aid and regulatory matters

Our practice groups that specialise in antitrust, state-aid and regulatory matters are well known for their high-profile work. They have long-standing working relationships with key EU institutions, know the technicalities and practicalities of the relevant EU laws, and keep in close contact with international colleagues. This means that we can give clients practical, comprehensive advice that covers the jurisdictions where they have business interests.

Recent examples of our work in antitrust and state-aid include: advising Pfizer the sale of its nutrition business to Nestlé; assisting FairSearch – a coalition of businesses and organizations – as their external EU counsel before the European Commission in the context of the latter's investigation into Google's abusive practices. We are also representing Samsung in the EC’s antitrust investigation, in which the Commission sought to assess whether Samsung had used certain of its standard essential patent rights abusively, a complex matter that stirred legal debate on the interplay between intellectual property and antitrust law

Our EU regulatory practice group is part of the firm’s Public Policy practice. Examples of the group's work includes advising the European Committee for Interoperable Systems on the development of the EU's cloud computing strategy; Tate & Lyle Sugars on the revision of the EU Single CMO Regulation; and two multinationals on the proposed EU legislation concerning financial reporting on a country by country basis.

Clients value our approach as much as our capabilities

We aim to combine the flexibility of a close-knit national team with the sophisticated resources of an international firm; we’re used to building cross-practice teams that include lawyers from our 26-country network. And our clients’ comments suggest that they like the way we work as much as the work we deliver:

“The team is very proactive, thinks about everything, makes suggestions, and has a very large knowledge of these matters.”

“The team is always at the forefront: the lawyers are innovators, and really set the standard. They are responsive, open and easy to deal with.”

“Very often we have questions where we need a very practical approach and no theory, and that's what the team will give us.”
