We are a market-leading firm in Belgium. Our reputation is built on high-profile work in the Belgian market and multi-jurisdiction transactions, antitrust and regulatory matters.

Domestic strength and international know-how

Our Belgian track record goes back to 1968, and today there are 13 partners and over 40 lawyers in our full-service Brussels office. We work with clients on a range of complex, often multi-jurisdictional questions and have particular strengths in multijurisdictional M&A, private equity, banking, finance and capital markets.

Our work regularly makes Belgian headlines. Recent examples include: advising JP Morgan on the €1.25bn share issue by KBC Bank, a leading Belgian bank, in 2012; the €315m sale of the 80,000 sq m Belair development in central Brussels in 2013, the largest ever single-asset transaction in Belgium; and the 2013 launch of Stievie, an online-viewing application, by VMMa, a Belgian television broadcaster.

Our talented lawyers' work on transactions like these helped us win 'Belgium law firm of the year' in 2013 from both Chambers Europe and the International Financial Law Review.

Experts in antitrust, state-aid and regulatory matters

Our practice groups that specialise in antitrust, state-aid and regulatory matters are well known for their high-profile work. They have long-standing working relationships with key EU institutions, know the technicalities and practicalities of the relevant EU laws, and keep in close contact with international colleagues. This means that we can give clients practical, comprehensive advice that covers the jurisdictions where they have business interests.

Recent examples of our work in antitrust and state-aid include: advising Citigroup on European Commission (EC) antitrust issues when it sold EMI in 2011 for $4.1bn; and a year of negotiations that secured EC clearance, in 2013, for the state-aid rescue of the Dexia banking group by the governments of Belgium, France and Luxembourg. We are also representing Samsung in the EC’s antitrust investigation that launched in 2012 – a complex matter that’s stirred legal debate on the interplay between intellectual property and antitrust law

Our regulatory practice-group is part of the firm's international Public Policy group and advises the European Committee for Interoperable Systems on the development of the EU's cloud computing strategy.

Clients value our approach as much as our capabilities

We aim to combine the flexibility of a close-knit national team with the sophisticated resources of an international firm; were used to building cross-practice teams that include lawyers from our network. And our clients' comments suggest that they like the way we work as much as the work we deliver:

"The team is very proactive, thinks about everything, makes suggestions, and has a very large knowledge of these matters."

"The team is always at the forefront: the lawyers are innovators, and really set the standard. They are responsive, open and easy to deal with."

"Very often we have questions where we need a very practical approach and no theory, and that's what the team will give us."
