Clifford Chance advises banking consortium on acquisition financing for BARD Offshore 1 wind farm by Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets

International law firm Clifford Chance advised an international consortium of banks on the financing of the acquisition of the offshore wind farm BARD Offshore 1 by funds managed by Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA). The seller is UniCredit, which previously held 100 percent of the shares in the offshore wind farm BARD Offshore 1.

The 400 megawatt offshore wind farm BARD Offshore 1 is positioned 100 kilometres off the coast of northwestern Germany. Comprised of 80 5-megawatt wind turbines spread over 59 square kilometres, the project harnesses powerful North Sea winds to supply the equivalent of approximately 463,000 households with clean electricity each year.

BARD Offshore 1 was Germany’s first commercial scale offshore wind farm when it entered operation in 2013. Following its initial years of operation, the project was considered Germany’s most productive offshore wind farm.

MIRA is the world's largest infrastructure manager, overseeing investments in green energy projects with a total generation capacity of 13.4 gigawatts.

The international Clifford Chance team advising the international group of lenders included partner Florian Mahler, associate Pamela Horn (both Düsseldorf), partner Anne Drakeford and senior associates Joseph Woodworth and Charles Wakiwaka (all London) – all Finance, as well as partner Björn Heinlein and counsel Martin Weitenberg (both Corporate/Energy, Düsseldorf) as well as partner Anselm Raddatz and senior associate Tobias Kamerling (both Corporate, Düsseldorf).
