Clifford Chance advises GIGA Storage on financing of 2.8 GWh energy storage project in Belgium

Global law firm Clifford Chance has advised GIGA Storage, a European operator of large-scale energy storage projects and a portfolio company of InfraVia Capital Partners, on the financing of the Green Turtle energy storage project in Belgium. The project will have a capacity of 700 MW and storage capacity of 2,800 MWh. The firm also advised on key project conditions, including permits, land contracts, supplier contracts and the grid connection.

A consortium of ten international banks is financing the project. The consortium includes ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank, Triodos Bank, Triodos Investment Management, a.s.r., Belfius, HCOB, Santander and SMBC. Financial close took place on 9 July 2026. Construction will start in September 2026 and the project is expected to be commissioned in 2028. Read more about this transaction here.

The cross-border Clifford Chance team was led by Liesbeth Buiter, Hein Tonnaer and Nanette Rutgers and the core team included Lotte de Bruin, Philine Zambon, Daniël van Selst, Yassin van Meel, Wout Sleurs, Philippe Baert and Bogomil Kukovski. Clifford Chance has previously advised GIGA Storage on a number of strategic transactions, including the 100MW tolling agreement with Vattenfall, the GIGA Leopard financing, the acquisition of a majority shareholding by InfraVia, and the GIGA Giraffe financing.
