Clifford Chance advises EuroAsia Interconnector on the awarding of a €1.43 billion HVDC subsea cables contract to Nexans for the Cyprus – Greece link

Our Brussels infrastructure team is advising EuroAsia on the development and construction of the EuroAsia Interconnector, a flagship project in the European energy market. The interconnector is one of a key cross-border infrastructure project for the EU and a leading European Project of Common Interest (PCl). The project will connect Cyprus with Israel and Cyprus with Crete and mainland Greece. This will end the energy isolation of all Cyprus and Israel, creating security supply and an energy highway between Europe and Asia. It will deliver up to 2,000 MW of energy at stage 2 to Europe and will be the largest submarine electricity interconnector in history, supplying over 3 million homes with electricity.

Today, 19 July, EuroAsia Interconnector awarded the world record high voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cables engineering, construction and installation contract to Nexans. The contract is for the link of the EuroAsia Interconnector that will connect Cyprus and Greece and is valued at €1.43 billion. The HVDC cable will be the longest and deepest interconnector in the world.

Clifford Chance has been advising EuroAsia on the EPC contracts and on the tender procedure. The project is being led by our Brussels infrastructure team, partner Patrice Viaene, associates Philippe Baert and Louis De Meulemeester. We are proud to advise EuroAsia, a global game-changer in the world’s energy transition, on this innovative project and grateful for the trust shown by our client in our capabilities. We look forward to assist EuroAsia on the next milestones and workstreams of the project.
