Leading international law firm Clifford Chance has advised Berjaya Corporation Berhad (Berjaya) and its subsidiary, Kyoto Higashiyama Hospitality Assets Tokutei Mokuteki Kaisha, on the sale of the hotel component of the Four Seasons Hotel & Hotel Residences Kyoto, Japan to Godo Kaisha Tigre.
The five-star Hotel commenced operations in 2016 under the Four Seasons brand.
The development was Berjaya's first hotel development project in Japan.
The Clifford Chance team, who began advising Berjaya on the Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto in 2012, was led by Tokyo partners Leng-Fong Lai and Eiichi Kanda. They were assisted by counsel Yoshiaki Shimizu and associates Matthew Ball and Tomoki Goto.
Leng-Fong Lai said, "Clifford Chance has had a long standing role with the hotel, and we are extremely proud to see such a fantastic outcome for Berjaya."
"We advised Berjaya since the start of this project in 2012, from the initial acquisition of the land, the financing and the hotel's construction and right through to the sale. We were there from the very start, which makes this project particularly special."
The sale was completed in March 2020.
