Clifford Chance advises Carrefour on its strategic cooperation with Google

The Carrefour and Google groups recently announced a strategic cooperation regarding the development of new distribution models and user purchase experiences for French consumers. This cooperation is notably based on the three following initiatives: the availability of Carrefour on a new Google shopping website and Google Assistant in France, the creation of a Carrefour-Google innovation lab and the acceleration of Carrefour's digitalization.

Through this partnership, Google will bring its technology and skills in AI, cloud, and new consumer shopping interfaces like the Google Assistant. Carrefour will contribute its product expertise and know-how in logistics and sales.

This cooperation is the first of its kind between Google and a retailer for the French market. It is aimed at offering new and innovative user experiences for the French market, with the common objective for the two groups of bringing together their expertise and putting it at the service of consumers. The cooperation is focused on innovation and technological progress, and it is part of Carrefour's key strategy regarding its digital transformation.

Clifford Chance advised Carrefour with a team composed of Dessislava Savova, the Partner in charge of Clifford Chance's Commercial Contracts – TMT group and Tech Group in Paris, and Alexander Kennedy, Counsel in the Paris Commercial Contracts – TMT group and member of the Tech Group, including on the contractual, commercial and Tech aspects, as well as David Tayar, Partner, and Alice Guérin, Associate, on the antitrust aspects.

Les groupes Carrefour et Google ont récemment annoncé la mise en place d'un partenariat stratégique pour le développement de nouveaux modèles de distribution et de nouvelles expériences d'achat pour les consommateurs français. Ce partenariat reposera notamment sur les trois piliers suivants : le déploiement de l’offre Carrefour sur une nouvelle interface du site de Google Shopping et sur l’Assistant Google en France, la création d’un Lab Carrefour-Google ainsi que l’accélération de la digitalisation de Carrefour.

A travers ce partenariat, Google apportera ses compétences technologiques et ses outils autour de l’intelligence artificielle, du Cloud et des nouvelles interfaces telles que l’Assistant Google. Carrefour amènera de son côté toute son expertise produits et son savoir-faire dans les domaines de la logistique et de la vente.

Carrefour est le premier distributeur avec lequel Google s’associe en France. Ce partenariat vise à offrir aux utilisateurs des expériences nouvelles et innovantes pour le marché français, avec l'objectif commun pour les deux groupes de combiner leurs expertises et de les mettre au service des consommateurs. Il est axé sur l'innovation et le progrès technologique, et s'inscrit dans la stratégie de Carrefour concernant sa transformation digitale.
