Clifford Chance/University of the Arts London Sculpture Award 2019 - Susana Uvidia

The Clifford Chance/University of the Arts London Sculpture Award 2019 has been presented to Susana Del Rocio Uvidia Humanante who completed her MA Fine Art studies at Central Saint Martins, UAL in 2018.

The £3,750 Award was open to all post-graduate students at the UAL's constituent colleges and gives the selected artist the opportunity to display their sculpture in the Reception of Clifford Chance's offices at Canary Wharf for six months. The Award is presented to the sculpture proposal that best responds to the specificity of Clifford Chance's London office.

Susana Uvidia is an Ecuadorian artist interested in the systems through which cultural difference are presented, transformed and consumed. At Clifford Chance, Susana's sculpture installation Cli-Cha (a portmanteau title that is both a union of Clifford and Chance and also evokes the artist's Quechua heritage) consists of screens of brightly painted steel rods, configured into a form that suggests the firm's experience and expertise working for a worldwide, and culturally diverse, client base. Strength, direction and solution are all invoked.

Mark Payne, chair of the firm's Art Committee, said 'The Committee was unanimous in selecting Susana's proposal for our client reception. Her sculpture uses bright, colourful and robust materials that communicate a readily understood message about the firm's strong commitment to multiculturalism. Its economy of expression emphasises the transparency and openness that we value at Clifford Chance.'

The winning artist said 'The Award has increased my exposure. And, most importantly, it has given me more confidence to continue believing in my art and develop my artistic practice, knowing that it has been recognized in an award for emerging artists.'

Through our annual Sculpture Award, now in its 15th year, Clifford Chance are delighted to demonstrate our ongoing support for the international artists completing their studies at the UAL’s art colleges.
