Clifford Chance positions itself as an employer of the future with its "smart working" initiative

As part of a "smart working" initiative recently launched at its German offices, Clifford Chance has set up a number of projects aimed at playing an active role in developing solutions to meet the changing demands of the modern working world. A major focus of the initiative is on improving work-life balance. The Firm is currently taking part in a "workandfamily" audit (German: audit berufundfamilie) by berufundfamilie Service GmbH, a private German service provider that has been working with renowned companies for 20 years, helping them find customised solutions to optimise employees' work-life balance. Clifford Chance has just been awarded the "workandfamily audit" certificate which represents the starting signal that the audit has officially begun.

"By beginning the audit process, we have undertaken to bring about sustainable improvements over the next three years, making it easier for everyone at the Firm to reconcile family and private life with the work we do together and on behalf of our clients" said Folke Werner, Head of Human Resources at Clifford Chance Germany. "The certificate reflects our commitment and ambition to implement the targets we have set for ourselves for improving work-life balance step by step."

One of the first measures taken by the Firm as part of its "smart working" initiative in Germany was to introduce a remote working policy. The policy applies to employees in all German offices, giving them the option to work from home or elsewhere at least one day a week day but also on a case by case basis at short notice. "The policy is one of the first measures implemented under our "smart working" initiative" stated Folke Werner. The remote working policy applies to employees from all business areas of the Firm, providing a binding, reliable and consistent framework for all Clifford Chance employees.

Peter Dieners, Managing Partner of Clifford Chance in Germany, added "The legal services market is highly competitive and the future will be digital and diverse – if we want to attract and retain the most talented professionals, we will have to make clearer what we stand for and emphasise our commitment to agile working and working conditions tailored to the needs of the individual. We are now setting the course for the future".

The Firm plans to implement other "smart working" projects in the coming months with the aim of making Clifford Chance an even more attractive employer. These include revitalising the Firm's leadership culture and creating a more flexible work environment.
