Emma Stibbon RA awards Clifford Chance Printmaking Purchase Prize
The artist Emma Stibbon, recently elected to the Royal Academy of Arts, was invited to select the recipient of the Purchase Prize at Clifford Chance's annual Postgraduate Printmaking 2013 survey exhibition. Commenting on the exhibition, she said 'Print is where it is at. At every juncture of fine art, media and design, the print is very relevant. It is really inspiring to see the breadth of work.... a strong demonstration of current print practice.'
Emma Stibbon awarded the Purchase Prize to Victoria Ahrens, impressed with the quality of her print installation. Her work, she said 'alludes to the history of landscape art, the picturesque, but re-invents it into something surprising. Victoria plays with the language of print, re-sampling media, yet puts it together in a thoughtful, evocative way. Her work is enigmatic and haunting, with a strong presence that keeps rewarding.'
Victoria Ahrens completed her Postgraduate studies with distinction from the Camberwell College of Art in 2013. 'Working with the notion of permanence and impermanence, instability and uncertainty, my work becomes an allegory for the passage of time, and the futility of small acts of survival.... My experiments in print look to confront the imperfections of memory.' Victoria was awarded First Prize at the Celeste Art Prize 2013, Fondazione Studio Marangoni, Florence, Italy.
Through the Clifford Chance Purchase Prize, the artist's work will be acquired for the Clifford Chance art collection and funds provided for continued research in a print studio.
Esther Cavett, a Consultant on the Clifford Chance Art committee, said ‘We greatly appreciate the display of art in our offices and, each year, we value the opportunity to showcase these new talents from London’s art schools. Through our support of a new generation of printmakers, we hope the Purchase Prize encourages artists to continue to explore and experiment with the medium.’
