Clifford Chance advises banks and Euler Hermes on the financing of a major wind farm project in South Africa
Clifford Chance advised the South African banks Absa Capital, a division of Absa Bank Limited, and Nedbank Capital as well as Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Europe Ltd. and the German export credit agency Euler Hermes on the financing of the ZAR (South African Rand) 1,6 billion (around EUR 140 million) "Dorper" wind farm project in South Africa. Sponsors of the project are the Japanese Sumitomo Corporation and its local partner Rainmaker Energy.
This is one of the first 28 projects under round 1 of the IPP Procurement Programme for Renewable Energy by the South African Department of Energy (DOE), implemented by the South African government in order to support the construction and financing of renewable energy projects in the region. Furthermore, it is the first financing in this sector which is guaranteed by Euler Hermes in South Africa. In South Africa, numerous other projects in the wind and solar energy sector are currently in the bidding process with the involvement of international investors.
Euler Hermes was able to provide cover for this project, because the 40 wind turbines are provided by German company Nordex. Upon completion, the wind farm will be one of the largest renewable energy projects in South Africa. Construction is scheduled to commence in November 2012, with completion and commercial operation scheduled for July 2014.

Die internationale Anwaltssozietät Clifford Chance hat die südafrikanischen Banken Absa Capital, eine Einheit von Absa Bank Limited, und Nedbank Capital sowie die Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Europe Ltd. und den deutschen Kreditversicherer Euler Hermes bei der Finanzierung des Windparkprojekts "Dorper" in Südafrika mit einem Volumen von 1,6 Milliarden Südafrikanische Rand (rund 140 Millionen Euro) beraten. Sponsoren des Projekts sind die japanische Sumitomo Corporation und ihr lokaler Partner Rainmaker Energy.
Der Windpark ist eines von 28 Projekten unter der ersten Phase des IPP Procurement Programme for Renewable Energy des südafrikanischen Department of Energy (DOE), mit dem die südafrikanische Regierung die Errichtung und Finanzierung von Erneuerbaren Energien-Projekten in der Region fördert. Dies ist die erste Finanzierung in diesem Sektor, die Euler Hermes in Südafrika absichert. Zahlreiche weitere Projekte aus dem Wind- und Solarbereich in Südafrika befinden sich bereits in der Ausschreibung unter Beteiligung von internationalen Investoren.
Die Deckung durch Euler Hermes wurde möglich, da die 40 Windturbinen für den Windpark von dem deutschen Hersteller Nordex geliefert werden. Nach Fertigstellung wird dieser Windpark eines der größten Projekte im Bereich Erneuerbare Energien in Südafrika sein. Die Errichtung beginnt im November 2012, die Fertigstellung ist für Juli 2014 vorgesehen.
