Clifford Chance hosts seminar on safeguarding Chinese investment in Europe

Clifford Chance Luxembourg recently hosted a seminar for the Finance Working Group of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to the EU. The event brought together senior representatives from leading Chinese financial institutions in Europe, including ICBC (Europe) S.A., Bank of China (Europe) S.A., China Construction Bank (Europe) S.A., Agricultural Bank of China (Luxembourg) S.A., Bank of Communications (Luxembourg) S.A., China Merchants Bank (Europe) S.A., China Everbright Bank (Europe) S.A. and China Taiping Insurance (LU) S.A.

The seminar focused on the legal and governance challenges that may arise after an investment has been completed, against a backdrop of increased scrutiny of Chinese-invested businesses in Europe. Clifford Chance shared its experience advising investors where control over invested companies has been challenged or weakened. The discussion also covered legal and governance measures to protect investment value, shareholder rights and effective oversight.

Participants exchanged views on strengthening corporate governance frameworks, enhancing risk management and supporting the long-term resilience of invested businesses.

The seminar was led by Yong Bai, Xiang Li and Ziwen Wang from Clifford Chance China, and Christian Kremer and Yi Wang from Clifford Chance Luxembourg.

The event provided a platform for dialogue between legal and financial professionals. It also highlighted the importance of close cooperation between investors, financial institutions and legal advisers to support sustainable investment and future capital flows between China and Europe.
