In the run-up to COP30 in November 2025, expectations are building that the new carbon market mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement will soon be fully operational.

In this briefing, we take a look at what has already been achieved, and what potential buyers of Article 6 carbon credits will be looking for from UN bodies, governments and other stakeholders both inside and outside of COP as they navigate their way in these markets, and more broadly what opportunities there are now for private sector participation in the Article 6 carbon markets.
