John-Patrick (JP) Powers has over nine years of experience in the fields of international economic regulation and foreign trade controls. He advises leading financial institutions and trading companies on US sanctions issues and compliance with US sanctions laws and regulations. He has participated in a wide range of US sanctions investigations and enforcement actions as well as designing compliance programs for multinational corporations and financial institutions in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

  • Advising leading financial institutions and trading companies on compliance with the US economic sanctions
  • Advising leading financial institutions and trading companies regarding the identification of high risk customers and the implementation of policies, procedures and controls designed to mitigate the associated risk
  • Advising leading global financial institutions and trading companies with respect to the adequacy of their compliance policies and procedures to address cross-border risk associated with US and international economic sanctions laws and regulations
  • Designing and implementing bespoke compliance policies, procedures and controls for major multinational corporates and international financial institutions
  • Conducting sanctions and export controls related risk-assessments for major international financial institutions and multinational corporations, including assessments of the policies and procedures for identification of high risk customers and transactions and implementation of risk mitigation measures
  • Advising a multinational development bank with respect to the adequacy of its compliance policies and procedures and work with the bank to develop and implement enhancements to its existing compliance program
  • Conducting numerous cross-border investigations and forensic look-back exercises involving potential sanctions violations by non-US financial institutions and multinational corporations and representing numerous clients in high-profile OFAC enforcement cases
  • Representing several major non-US financial institutions in US Grand Jury investigations of potential violations of US economic sanctions and export control regulations and money laundering, fraud and conspiracy statutes
