Jon Newman

Jon Newman’s practice focuses on real estate acquisitions and dispositions, joint ventures and financing transactions, including mortgage, mezzanine, and preferred equity financings of US real estate.

Jon also regularly represents landlords and tenants in ground leases and in commercial leasing transactions across the US. Jon’s extensive leasing experience includes a deep knowledge in data center leases and master services agreements.

Further, his experience includes real estate fund formation, LP investments into real estate funds and foreign investment into US real estate. He also advises on Shari'a compliant investment, with a particular emphasis on structuring real estate acquisitions and fund investments in a Shari’a compliant manner.

  • Taconic Capital, in a joint venture with Madison Capital formed to provide a mortgage loan for the acquisition and repositioning of a Class A San Francisco office building.
  • State-owned or controlled companies around the world, in connection with their investments in real estate assets of all class types across the United States.
  • A global financial institution in the development and occupation of a Tier 4 data center in the NYC metro region, intended to provide mission critical fully resilient IT infrastructure to support its global financial services.
  • A Gulf-based fund, in connection with various Shari’a compliant LP investments into U.S. and European funds.
  • QIA, in the acquisition of 5 commercial condominium units located at 809 UN Plaza, NY, NY, as well as in the subsequent restructuring and share transfer to the State of Qatar.*
  • Wafra Inc., in the sale of The Nathaniel, a multifamily asset in New York City’s East Village.*
  • A Gulf investor in the acquisition and leasing of office buildings in New York, Boston and other East Coast cities.*
  • Credit Suisse in a sale leaseback of its new office building located in the Research Triangle Park near Raleigh, NC.*
  • Fenway Sports Group, on the acquisition of the controlling interest in the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team.*
  • Fenway Sports Group, on a development joint venture for the development of properties around Fenway Park.*
  • CVS Health, in a definitive agreement to acquire Oak Street Health in an all-cash transaction valued at US$39 per share, representing an enterprise value of approximately US$10.6 billion.*
  • Orion Mine Finance (Orion), in its acquisition of Occidental Petroleum Corporation’s Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah Land Grant assets in exchange for a purchase price of approximately US$1.33 billion.*
