International law firm Clifford Chance has seen three of its people feature in The Lawyer Hot 100, which celebrates the legal profession's brightest stars of 2020. Head of London Finance Emma Matebalavu, Corporate Partner Daud Khan and Head of UK Real Estate Construction Marianne Toghill are among the 100 listed lawyers, which include General Counsels and senior in-house counsels, Barristers and rising private practice lawyers.

Last year, Emma oversaw a stellar track of commercial mortgage-back securities and residential mortgage-backed securities transactions, and non-performing loan portfolios (NPL). As part of Project Helix, Emma helped secure the signing of the Bank of Cyprus’s €2.8bn loan portfolio to client and winning bidder Apollo - the first big sale of NPLs in the Cypriot banking system.

Since making Partner in 2018, Daud has built a strong cross-border M&A practice, acting for Fosun, QNB Group and Coca-Cola among other clients. In addition, he spent several months on secondment at easyJet, where he acted as interim General Counsel following the departure of the previous General Counsel. During the secondment, he had responsibility for a department of 65 lawyers, paralegals, economists and compliance professionals, and reported directly to the CEO and chair of the board.

Marianne advised many of the major developments taking place in London in 2019, including Hong Kong-listed Country Garden, the biggest property developer in the world, on its debut in London and the £400m Ailsa Wharf housing project in Poplar.
She has also advised longstanding clients Battersea Power Station Development Company on the station’s £8bn regeneration and Native Land’s construction of an £1.3bn eight-building development at Bankside Yards.
