Victor Yao is a Senior Associate in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice of Cavenagh Law LLP.
A former Justices’ Law Clerk, Victor has acted for clients in a wide variety of high-value and complex international commercial arbitration matters across a range of sectors and applicable laws. Victor also has an active litigation practice and has appeared at all levels of the Singapore courts, including the SICC.

Arbitration:
- M&A: A major pension fund in an SIAC arbitration concerning an investment in Asia in excess of €500 million. Singapore law applies.
- M&A: The subsidiary of an international media company in an SIAC arbitration concerning the valuation of shares in its joint venture company. Singapore law applied.
- Mining/Sale of Goods: The subsidiary of an Indonesian conglomerate in an SIAC arbitration concerning the Thai counterparty's failure to perform a coal sale and purchase agreement. The award sum exceeded US$150 million. Singapore law applied.
- Construction: The subsidiary of an Indonesian conglomerate in relation to a dispute arising out of contracts relating to the construction of a nickel smelter. Indonesian law applies.
- Construction: A global energy solutions provider in consolidated ad-hoc arbitration proceedings seated in India relating to an oilfield development project in Rajasthan, India. The sum in dispute exceeded US$300 million. Indian law applied.
- Financial Services: A global alternative asset manager in SIAC arbitration arising out of unpaid interest and redemption payments pursuant to certain debt securities issued by a major Indian infrastructure development group. The amount in dispute exceeded US$230 million. Indian law applied.
- Financial Services: The Chinese borrower under a Securities Loan Agreement in a Singapore-seated SIAC arbitration against a US-based lender for breaches of the agreement and recovery of the collateral, valued at approximately US$50 million. Singapore law applied.
Litigation:
- The subsidiary of an Indonesian conglomerate in SICC proceedings defending an application to set aside an award in excess of US$150 million.
- An Indonesian company in SICC and Singapore Court of Appeal proceedings to set aside/remit an arbitral award – see CKH v CKG [2022] 2 SLR 1 and CKH v CKG [2022] 2 SLR 16.
Restructuring and insolvency:
- An ad hoc group of Noteholders, holding NY law-governed notes issued by Sritex, in relation to their positions in the restructuring under a PKPU process.
- The receiver of a minority shareholding of a Singapore holding company of a Vietnamese pharmaceutical business appointed by the pledgee.
Investigations:
- Assisting with an internal investigation by an international financial institution into allegations of fraudulent claims under standby letters of credit.
