Clifford Chance advises ExxonMobil on carbon capture, transportation and storage for power generation project agreement
Houston: Global law firm Clifford Chance advised ExxonMobil on its agreement with Calpine Corporation, the nation’s largest producer of electricity from natural gas, to transport and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons per annum (MTA) of carbon dioxide (CO2) from Calpine’s Baytown Energy Center, a cogeneration facility near Houston, Texas.
This work continues the firm's support of ExxonMobil, with partner Jonathan Castelan leading the Clifford Chance team on all of ExxonMobil's seven announced carbon capture sequestration (CCS) agreements.
The CO2 from Calpine’s facility will tie into ExxonMobil’s CO2 pipeline system, the largest in the world, which is located along the US Gulf Coast and supports enhanced oil recovery and permanent CO2 sequestration.
Castelan said, "It is an honor to continue working with the ExxonMobil team on their CCS transactions."
Castelan was supported by associates Sam Bentley and Hillary Healey, with partner Todd Lowther advising on tax matters.
