Clifford Chance advises AXIAN Energy on the financial close for the NEA Kolda solar power plant with battery energy storage system (BESS) in Senegal
AXIAN Energy, a pan-African renewable energy leader, has reached the financial close of the NEA Kolda photovoltaic power plant in the Casamance region of Senegal, following the start of construction in May 2025 using the company’s own funds.
With an installed capacity of 60 MWp combined with 72 MWh of battery energy storage (BESS), NEA Kolda is the largest photovoltaic project with battery storage in West Africa. Commercial operations are expected to begin in November 2026.
The project is expected to generate approximately 91 GWh of clean electricity per year, significantly strengthening the country’s energy supply.
The project is backed by €72 million in financing, structured by the Emerging Africa and Asia Infrastructure Fund (EAAIF) and FMO (Netherlands’ Entrepreneurial Development Bank), acting as arrangers, alongside the DEG-Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH.
The clean electricity produced will be secured for the national grid under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Senelec, supplying power to more than 235,000 Senegalese households. The integration of battery storage will enhance grid resilience during peak demand periods and support the increasing penetration of renewable energy into the national mix.

AXIAN Energy, acteur panafricain des énergies renouvelables, a finalisé le closing financier de la centrale photovoltaïque NEA Kolda, implantée en Casamance au Sénégal, après avoir lancé les travaux de la centrale en mai 2025 sur fonds propres.
D’une capacité installée de 60 MW crête couplée à 72 MWh de stockage par batterie (BESS), NEA Kolda se positionne comme le projet photovoltaïque avec le plus grand système de stockage d’énergie par batterie en Afrique de l’Ouest. La mise en service commerciale est attendue pour le mois de novembre 2026.
Le projet permettra de produire environ 91 GWh d’électricité propre par an, contribuant de manière significative au renforcement de l’approvisionnement énergétique du pays.
Le projet bénéficie d’un financement de 72 millions d’euros pour un coût total du projet d’environ 90 millions d’euros, structuré par l’Emerging Africa and Asia Infrastructure Fund (EAAIF) et la FMO (Banque néerlandaise de développement entrepreneurial), agissant en qualité d’arrangeurs, aux côtés de la DEG-Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH.
L’électricité propre produite sera sécurisée pour le réseau national dans le cadre d’un contrat d’achat d’électricité (PPA) d’une durée de 25 ans avec Senelec, permettant d’alimenter plus de 235 000 foyers sénégalais. L’intégration du stockage par batterie renforcera la résilience du réseau face aux pics de consommation et facilitera l’intégration croissante des énergies renouvelables dans le mix national.
