The background

The best ideas come from clients and the Cross-Border Publisher product is no exception.

The idea was sparked when the Clifford Chance Amsterdam office was instructed by ING to prepare a multi-jurisdictional survey on five legal areas largely concerning the management of data, including personal data protection, outsourcing and bank secrecy among others.

Clifford Chance won the mandate on the basis of its global expertise in providing high quality multi-jurisdictional data protection advice, alongside the added advantage of being able to deliver the end result in an innovative digital format by way of a Clifford Chance Applied Solutions product. ING ideally wanted a solution that meant the legal advice would be highly accessible and capable of being distributed to large teams easily.

Recognising that a digital form of delivery for multi-jurisdictional content would be of benefit to many companies, as would a trusted source of data protection knowledge (alongside other topics), an idea was formed to build a platform to publish, and allow users to navigate and compare, multi-jurisdictional legal guidance on areas of common business concern.

The product development

The content was developed by the Clifford Chance network of lawyers, working in tandem with Clifford Chance Applied Solutions, who developed the platform, to structure the content and ensure it was optimised for the platform.

The platform was developed with ING's feedback at all stages of product development. This was invaluable in creating an intuitive product that works well for all types of users who require a consistent knowledge base, from in-house counsel to data protection professionals.

Passing ING's rigorous third-party security requirements is no mean feat for a cloud-based product but Cross-Border Publisher met the required standard and was successfully onboarded. This means ING can trust both the content and the security of the platform.

The result

ING is now using Cross-Border Publisher globally, having rolled out the product to multiple users in the legal, data privacy and innovation teams across the bank.

The feedback so far is that ING users really like the structure of the content, which is kept up to date, particularly the focused Q&A format and the ability to filter and compare answers for different jurisdictions. In addition, the product makes it easy to navigate to the relevant legislation and rule references via helpful links, which is a real time saver.

ING has identified that Cross-Border Publisher is helping the bank meet its data management challenges and that it will continue to do so as Clifford Chance, Clifford Chance Applied Solutions and ING look towards expanding the scope of the project in the future.
