Singapore is an important financial hub for South-East Asia. We opened an office here in 1981 and today we work with clients in every major country in the region.

One platform for international and Singapore law capability

We opened for business over 30 years ago and our100-plus lawyers know the Singapore and South East and Southern Asia markets well. We have a strong team combining local and international talent across all key areas of our practice.

In 2008, the Singapore Government awarded one of only six new Qualifying Foreign Law Practice licences to Clifford Chance, as part of its plans to further liberalise the legal sector. This licence allows us to practice and advise on a wide range of international and Singapore law in permitted practice areas. The QFLP was renewed in 2014.

In 2012, Cavenagh Law LLP and Clifford Chance Pte Ltd registered as a Formal Law Alliance in Singapore under the name Clifford Chance Asia. The Formal Law Alliance allows the two firms to provide the broadest range of Singapore and international law services from one platform with Singapore litigation representation and real estate expertise provided through Cavenagh Law LLP.

We regularly work on some of the region's groundbreaking transactions.

Recent examples of our work include:

    • advised Merrill Lynch , HSBC and J.P. Morgan as the joint lead managers and underwriters on Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Limited's (OCBC) US$ 2.7 billion renounceable rights issue. This was the largest equity raising in the Singapore market in 2014. (2014)
advised 15 banks on the international aspects of Garuda Indonesia's US$500 million sukuk. (2015)
    • advised the arrangers in connection with separate US$1 billion and US$500 million credit facility agreements for Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, each guaranteed by Reliance Industries Limited. (2014)
    • represented PNG Sustainable Development Program Limited (PNGSDP), a Singapore incorporated company, in a dispute with the Independent State of Papua New Guinea arising from the State's expropriation of PNGSDP's share in the Ok Tedi mine, a gold and copper mine in Papua New Guinea. (2015)
    • advised Sime Darby on its US$1.74 billion cash offer for New Britain Palm Oil Limited. (2014)
    • advised Mitsubishi Corporation on the acquisition of a strategic stake in Singapore-listed Olam International Ltd. for approximately US$1.1billion. (2015).
    • advised Eksport Kredit Fonden (EKF) and a group of local and international lenders on the US$315 million financing for the 150MW Burgos Wind Project in the Philippines, the largest wind power project in the Philippines. (2014)

    A wide reaching coverage list

Our teams work on inbound and outbound deals across and beyond the region. These teams often include colleagues from our nine other Asia Pacific offices (including our associated office LWP in Jakarta, Indonesia) and lawyers from carefully chosen local law firms. This gives clients the right mix of local-language and local-law capability, on-the-ground experience, and the expertise of specialist lawyers from across the firm.

In 2014 alone, we worked with clients in over 50 countries throughout the Asia Pacific region and further afield. This level of year-on-year experience helps us keep clients up-to-date on market trends, and build strong working relationships with local law firms in countries where we do not have an office. Our knowledge enables us to pick the right firm for each client instruction on a case-by-case basis.

We regularly work on India-related business, and have a dedicated Singapore-based India-related team. Recent India-related work led by our Singapore office includes advising: on the US$600 million Regulation S / Rule 144A qualified institutions placement by Indiabulls Housing Finance Limited; on a US$300 million high yield bond offering by Reliance Communications; Japan Bank for International Cooperation as part of a consortium of lenders on a total of ¥55 billion (US$500 million) in loans to India's largest petrochemical company, Reliance Industries Limited; and on four LCIA Arbitrations on behalf of companies owned and controlled by one of India's most prominent developers against a UK listed entity concerning a series of development projects across India with a value of over £1 billion (2015).
