On Tuesday, 8 March 2022 a pan-European panel of experts spoke on the human rights elements of the new EU corporate sustainability due diligence proposal published on 23 February 2022 in a joint webinar of Clifford Chance and Global Business Initiative on Human Rights (GBI).
The Clifford Chance team, including Rae Lindsay, Partner, Thomas Voland, Partner, Anna Kirkpatrick, Senior Associate and Michelle Williams, Partner, provided an introduction to the proposal, including discussing some of the measures which companies will need to take. They also discussed how the proposal compares to new and upcoming legislation which is already in place in European jurisdictions and considered the implications for non-European businesses, as well as covering the forms of enforcement that would apply.
The conversation then turned to the business perspective with Daniel Kronen, Head of Human Rights Compliance, Siemens AG and Andrea Shemberg, Chair & Senior Advisor, GBI discussing how the proposal will impact businesses and how businesses are preparing. Benn Hogan, Director, GBI, who moderated the event then closed the webinar by looking at what happens next in the legislative process.
