On 21 March 2013, the Senate approved the new Belgian Competition Act. This was the last step in finalising one of the key objectives of Minister of Economic Affairs Vande Lanotte, that is, making the Belgian Competition Authority more effective and controlling inflation through stricter competition law enforcement.
To achieve this goal, the new Competition Act simplifies the institutional structure of the Competition Authority and implements shorter and more efficient procedures.
The Act is expected to fully come into effect in September of this year. That is also when the new Authority should become fully operational.
