The interest from both State and privately held Chinese acquirers in natural resources companies traded in London or on the Australian Securities Exchange ("ASX") is well acknowledged.

In this article, we focus on the often poorly understood outbound approvals process for public takeovers of such companies by Chinese acquirers. We explain the responsibilities of the key Chinese regulators in this process and the challenges that exist in aligning the Chinese approval process with the requirements of public market transactions in Australia and the UK.
