On 21 December 2012 the European Union's Article 29 Working Group, composed of representatives of the national data protection authorities of the EU Member States, the European Data Protection Supervisor and the European Commission, announced that parties offering personal data processing services (known as "data processors") would be able to adopt Binding Corporate Rules as of 1 January 2013. The availability of Binding Corporate Rules for data processors under the EU Data Protection Directive creates opportunities for data processors as well as their customers.
