The initial belief among some commentators that Russia was capable of avoiding the worst effects of the global downturn proved wide of the mark. Russian growth came to an abrupt end in late 2008, with the slowdown continuing during 2009 and as the economy shrank by almost 8%. Now the picture looks somewhat healthier with the economy growing and the M&A market showing signs of life.
