Public international law specialist joins Clifford Chance's leading Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice

International law firm Clifford Chance today announces that Jessica Gladstone is to join the firm's London office as a partner. Ms Gladstone specialises in public and private international law and regularly advises multinationals, financial institutions, foreign investors and sovereign states in disputes concerning commercially significant, complex, cross-border international law issues.

Ms Gladstone has advised on a number of high profile cases, including Singapore v Malaysia; British Caribbean Bank v Attorney General of Belize; and recently appearing before the Privy Council for the Government of St Kitts & Nevis. Previously, she was a legal adviser at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, where she managed international and domestic litigation, and represented the UK at the UN General Assembly, in the Council of Europe, and in cases before the European Court of Human Rights. She is frequently invited to speak on public international law issues (including by Chatham House, Thomson Reuters, Oxford University) and she lectures the LLM in international arbitration at Kings College London.

Jeremy Sandelson, Global Head of Clifford Chance's Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice, said:

"As governments and state owned enterprises become increasingly active in the commercial sphere, public international law expertise is critical to our clients as we help them to navigate the risks and opportunities this new landscape brings.

Jessica is focused on international, complex, strategic work for some of the world's leading businesses and governments, making her the ideal fit for our team. We are delighted to welcome her."

Ms Gladstone commented:

"Clifford Chance, with its extensive international network and public international law experience, is the perfect foundation for my practice. As international business relationships and regulation continue to evolve, an understanding of developments in international law and an ability to deliver solutions that are effective both commercially and politically, become increasingly valuable to clients. I look forward to joining this leading team."

Audley Sheppard QC, Co-head of Clifford Chance's International Commercial Arbitration Group, said:

"Jessica's experience in public international law will be an excellent boost to our team. Over the past decade, we have seen the number of arbitration cases that involve State parties increase significantly and we expect this trend to continue, especially investment treaty arbitrations."

Clifford Chance's global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice has over 450 lawyers based in the UK, Continental Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and the United States, who are experienced in the full spectrum of litigation, dispute resolution and regulatory issues that our clients face. For over 40 years, the firm has had a leading public international law practice. This global team has advised corporations, sovereign States and international organisations on the complex and far-reaching effects of public and private international law and, increasingly, on international regulation and enforcement, and represented parties to investment protection arbitrations.
