Clifford Chance elects Michael Seaton to its partnership

NEW YORK — Leading international law firm Clifford Chance today announced that Michael Seaton has been elected to its partnership as part of its Tax, Pensions & Employment (TPE) practice in New York. Seaton joins 20 other colleagues from across Clifford Chance's global network named to this year's new class of partners.

"This is well deserved recognition for Mike and we couldn't be happier to welcome him to the partnership," said Americas Regional Managing Partner Evan Cohen.  "Mike's elevation to partner further strengthens our TPE practice in New York, which is rated Band 1 by Chambers USA for its unparalleled REIT expertise and is highly respected globally for its international tax capabilities."

Seaton's practice focuses on partnership and corporate taxation, with an emphasis on REITs and private equity and real estate investment funds.  He represents a large number of the firm's public and private REIT clients on an ongoing basis.

"Mike has been involved in the structuring, formation and initial public offerings of a large number of REITs, as well as merger and acquisition transactions involving REITs," said Rich Catalano, head of Clifford Chance's US TPE practice.  "He also regularly advises both REITs and investment banks in connection with REIT public equity offerings.  Our top directory rankings in the REIT category reflect a good deal of Mike's contribution to our practice."

Seaton also advises sponsors and investors in connection with the formation and structuring of real estate funds and private equity funds.  He has provided advice to non-US investors regarding the various US tax consequences of private fund investments and secondary fund transactions, including the impact of FIRPTA, and has advised non-US governmental investors regarding private fund investments and other investments in the United States.

Seaton received his BA with distinction in philosophy and mathematics from the University of Michigan in 2000 and received his JD from New York University in 2004.  He also received his LLM in taxation from New York University in 2006. Seaton joined Clifford Chance as an associate with the firm in 2007 and is based in the New York office.
