Overview

Clifford Chance Singapore provides legal advice to regional and international clients working across south and south east Asia, including Singapore, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

The firm, which was established in 1981, offers both international and Singapore law advice in most areas of commercial law including banking and finance, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), capital markets, investment management, and regulatory, and international arbitration across a range of financial and industry sectors, such as energy, oil and gas, telecommunications, banking, and natural resources.

Over the years, Clifford Chance has drawn on the experience of its highly-skilled people in Singapore and the extensive resources of its global network, to advise on many of south east Asia's groundbreaking transactions, and that tradition continues today.

A one-stop shop for international and Singapore law capability

In 2008, the Singapore Government awarded one of only six new Qualifiying Foreign Law Practice licences to Clifford Chance, as part of its plans to liberalise the legal sector.

The licence allows our Singapore-qualified lawyers to practise Singapore law in all of our existing areas of practice, as well as international arbitration.

We started practising under the new licence in May 2009, and since then many of our existing lawyers have regained their Singapore practising certificates and advised clients on significant local law matters.

A centre for India-related work

With many of Asia's financial institutions choosing Singapore as their centre for India-related work, in 2008 we established a dedicated team in the Singapore office to focus primarily on capital markets transactions in the Indian market.

The team offers a combination of experience and understanding of Indian companies, securities and capital markets, together with international standards of technical and execution expertise.

Clients can also access the firm's wider knowledge in India-related M&A, finance and dispute resolution through the team.

Recent client assignments

Among our recent award-winning transactions, we advised on the largest IPO ever in south east Asia, Maxis Berhad's $3.3 billion IPO on the Bursa Malaysia, on Singapore's largest IPO in 16 years, the US$1.8 billion IPO of CapitaMalls Asia, and advised a number of banks on an innovative US$600 debt and financing package for Indonesian mining services company PT Bukit Makmur Mandiri Utama (Buma).
