Experience and career history
James Paul has an active general litigation practice involving antitrust, mergers and acquisitions, insurance, employment, foreign corrupt practices, trusts and estates, tax, and products liability. He has acted in more than 50 treble-damage actions involving the motion picture industry, as well as in related antitrust matters and has advised on the merits of antitrust claims in patent infringement cases. He has also been heavily involved in the antitrust aspects of mergers, acquisitions and product distribution arising in such diverse fields as financial services, watches, car rentals, stock quotations, health maintenance organizations, insurance, chemicals, gold trading and advertising. In employment discrimination proceedings, he has defended clients in some 15 cases, including hiring, promotion, and retirement benefits claims. He has extensive experience in the defense of legal malpractice actions and the ethical obligations of lawyers and law firms. He is a member of the Antitrust and Insurance Sections of the American Bar Association and the Committee on Professional and Judicial Conduct of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York; and is on the Advisory Committee of the America Bar Association's Ethics 2000 Committee.
James also functions as general counsel to Clifford Chance.
